When we hear the word “story” we usually associate it with a children’s tale or something along the lines, maybe entertainment. But the reality is that stories are the most ancient way we express (and share!) our humanity. Stories connect us, teach us, and heal us. They ignite curiosity and light the path when we feel lost.
But why do stories matter so much? What makes storytelling such a powerful and universal human experience? And why are we so drawn to stories, again and again?
As it turns out, science has answers but so does the soul. Stories Are Chemistry When we hear a story that resonates and moves us emotionally, our brains release oxytocin, the so-called “feel good” hormone. Oxytocin boosts empathy, trust, and compassion. It’s what helps us feel for the characters and, by extension, for each other. Unlike plain data or facts, stories help us relate. Not just understand. That’s why stories are so powerful in building community. They don’t just inform us. They invite us in. They let us feel seen.
Stories Are Sensory
Facts activate the data-processing parts of the brain. But when we hear a well-told story – especially one with emotional content – the brain lights up in multiple regions: language, sensory, emotional, and motor.
In other words, a story doesn’t just tell you something. It lets you experience it. That’s also why we remember stories far longer than we remember spreadsheets or slideshows. Stories stay with us because they’re encoded in the language of experience.
Stories Are Strategic – But Not Transactional
In business, stories aren’t a luxury. They’re a tool. Researchers at Harvard Business School found that character-driven stories with emotional content significantly outperform other methods when it comes to recall, persuasion, and motivation. Stories don’t just change minds. They change hearts. And hearts are what move people to act. That’s why some of the most enduring brands and movements are built around stories. Stories communicate purpose. They show how something (or someone) changes a life.
Stories Are Human
At their core, stories are about connection. The act of telling a story, one person to another, is one of the oldest and most enduring human rituals. Around fires, across generations, through words, paintings, music, and now digital media, storytelling helps us remember who we are… and who we might become. Whether it’s a founder’s journey, a hero’s call, or your neighbor’s turning point, we recognize ourselves in stories. They remind us that we’re not alone. That someone else has been through something similar and made it out the other side.
And That’s Why We’re Here
We created Enthusiasts of Life to share stories that spark something within – stories that inspire you to follow your excitement, that model transformation, that remind you of your own power. Whether through a book, a podcast, a conversation, or a blog post, we believe that stories are soul food.
So… what’s your story?
